Drfitwood is a quarter horse of legend. He was known as "Speedy" for years, and had many homes. Driftwood was born in 1932 in Silverton, Texas by Miller Boy. It was there that he competed in short length races, such as the 220 yards and up to three-eighths of a mile. Speedy was sold in 1941, at the age of nine, where he became a roping horse full-time. Ashburry Schell of Temple, Arizona is accredited to giving this show stopping stallion his rodeo exposure.
With the outbreak of World War II, the rodeo season was cut short, and Schell made the choice to sell Speedy. in 1943, Speedy's story and life changed. Channing and Katy Peake of Lompoc, California purchased Speedy. When Katy Peake went to register the stallion with the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA), the name Speedy was already being used; that is when Driftwood was born.
Channing and Katy Peake began their breeding dreams by simply wanting to raise performance horses. This was that no-one else was doing. The Peakes' made sure that the Driftwood name was going to be known for being well-rounded horses. Driftwood passed away in 1960. In 1983, Driftwood was inducted into the Trail of Great Cow Ponies, Cowboy Hall of Fame.
